No, Sports!

Auf der Waldau in Degerloch, der Sportgegend von Stuttgart, wird u.a. auch viel Fußball gespielt - selbst wenn Schnee liegt. Gleich in unmittelbarer Nähe befindet sich das "Gazi Stadion auf der Waldau", das u.a. Spielstätte der "Stuttgarter Kickers" ist.
The "Waldau" in Stuttgart-Degerloch is known as a sporting area. Football is played there in winter too. A few steps from here is the "Gazi"-stadium, the home-playground of the club "Stuttgarter Kickers".

Switched On

Der sogenannte "Tagblatt-Turm" in Stuttgart-Mitte ist jeden Abend auf diese Weise beleuchtet. Er ist eines der Wahrzeichen von Stuttgart. Hier befand sich bis 1943 der Redaktionssitz der Zeitung "Stuttgarter Neues Tagblatt". Heute ist es eine Kultureinrichtung.
This "high-rise" is known as "Tagblatt-Turm" and is situated in Stuttgart-Mitte. It's illuminated every evening with a light-filament. The "Tagblatt-Turm" is one of Stuttgart's landmarks and it was the seat of the newspaper "Stuttgarter Neues Tagblatt" until 1943. Now it is known as a cultural center.

Winter

Der Winter lässt einfach nicht locker und hat Stuttgart voll im Griff. Hier ein Foto mit Blick auf den Ostendplatz in Stuttgart-Ost.
The winter doesn't let up. It has Stuttgart under control. This photo shows a look to the place "Ostendplatz" in Ostheim, a part of Eastern Stuttgart.

Schmotziger Dunschtig

Die Faschingszeit nähert sich langsam ihrem Höhepunkt. Heute feiern alle Faschingsbegeisterten den sogenannten schmutzigen Donnerstag (auch: Schmotziger Dunschtig oder Altweiberfastnacht). Die stets freundlichen Angestellten der Bäckerei Voß am Ostendplatz gehören ohne jeden Zweifel nicht zu den Faschingsmuffeln.
The carnival time gradually peaks out. Today, all fans of carnival celebrate Greasy Thursday (also found: Women's Carnival Day, Castration Thursday, Drag Queens' Night, Night of Fast Women, Women's Abstinence Night, Women's Almost-Night). Without doubt, the always friendly staff of the Voss-Bakery at Ostendplatz is enthusiastic.

Ripe For Museum

This photo shows the "Mercedes-Benz Museum". It was opened in 2006 and is the first address for fans of this marque.

Good Morning!

Hier, im neueröffneten Cafe "Glora Kaffeehaus" in Stuttgart-Ost, kann der Arbeitstag mit einem wirklich guten Kaffee und z.B. einer Butterbrezel beginnen. Kaum vorstellbar, dass hier vorher eine Apotheke drin war. Herzlichen Dank für die Genehmigung zur Veröffentlichung.
In the newly opened coffeehouse "Glora Kaffeehaus" in the East of Stuttgart. The coffee is excellent here. In combination with a "Butterbrezel" (butter pretzel) a hard working day would be a little bit better. There was a pharmacy before the tasteful remodelling. Many thanks to the staff for the permission to publish this photo.

Live And Let Die

 

Ihr seht hier die "Jungfrau mit den Tränenschalen", die sich auf dem Waldfriedhof in Degerloch befindet. Die Figur wurde im Jahre 1914 vom Bildhauer Josef Zeitler geschaffen. Jeder Tropfen Wasser, der von einer der Schalen fällt, soll für ein soeben erloschenes Menschenleben stehen.
You can see the figure "the virgin with the cups of tears", which is situated on the cemetry "Waldfriedhof" in Degerloch. The figure was built in 1914 by the sculptor Josef Zeitler. Each waterdrop, which is falling off one of the cups, should emblematise a just lapsed human life.

Welcome

Diese Figur ist über einer Eingangstür angebracht und heißt seine Besucher herzlich willkommen. Ich habe selber gesehen, wie Leute das Haus wohlbehalten betreten haben...
This figure is placed above an entrance door of an older tenement and welcomes the occupant and their guests. I saw how people have entered this building without fear...

Way-Out

Nicht nur das Bild ist schräg (habe ich absichtlich so fotografiert), auch der Laden hat was "Schräges". Hier dreht sich alles hauptsächlich um Hunde, aber auch um andere Haustiere. Wer schon immer mal etwas zum Thema "Homöopathie für Hunde" wissen will, kann sich hierher wenden. Der Laden befindet sich in der Schlosserstraße (in der Nähe vom Wilhelmsplatz).
Not only this picture is bevelled, the shop to this is way-out too. This shop is specialised  in dogs and other domestic animals. Here you could get informations about "homoeopathy for dogs", for example. It's situated in Schlosserstrasse, near place Wilhelmsplatz. For my English-speaking visitors - in German language "bevelled" and "way-out" have the same word, even "schraeg".

Break-In

Ich habe hier keinen Einbrecher auf frischer Tat erwischt. Und als Kletterer ist er auch nicht erfolgreich, weil er sich schon seit Jahren nicht von der Stelle bewegt hat. Gestern abend nun endlich fotografiert, bevor er aufgibt.
I haven't caught this man red-handed at a housebreaking. This person isn't really successful as a climber too. It's still on the same place since years. Finally I've taken this photo yesterday evening bevor it will capitulate.

Traffic

Blick in den Schwabtunnel, der Stuttgart-West mit Stuttgart-Süd verbindet. Man beachte die Treppen links und rechts vom Tunnel und auf dem Tunnel, dies bietet besonders fitten Menschen die Möglichkeit, den Tunnel zu überqueren. Kaum zu Glauben, dass bis 1972 eine Straßenbahn durch den Tunnel fuhr: hier der Beweis - ein Foto von der anderen Richtung
View into the Schwabtunnel who's connecting the western quarter with the southern. Look the stairs beside and across the tunnel. It's possible to traverse the tunnel, but it's only advisable for fit people. Can you imagine that a tram was gone through this tunnel until 1972? It's true!

The Quiet Before The Storm

Noch ist es ruhig im Gasthaus "Ochsen" am Bihlplatz. Aber das kann sich zur Mittags- und Abendzeit ändern. Dieses Lokal kann ich ruhigen Gewissens empfehlen, besonders das sog. "Metzgergulasch" sollte probiert werden.
It's still quite in the restaurant "Ochsen" (ox), which is situated on the place "Bihlplatz". But at lunchtime or in the evening it will be active in it. And I can commend a stop at this restaurant. You should take the "Metzgergulasch", a tasty meat dish.

Theme Day: Wood

"Holz, Wald, Gehölz" ist heute das Thema des Tages. Und mein erster Beitrag überhaupt zu einem Thementag. Lange habe ich überlegt, was man da am besten fotografieren könnte. Aber dann gestern, bei einem Familien-Spaziergang, kam mir bei dieser Bank eine hoffentlich nette Idee...

... scheint uns dieses Kerlchen zuzurufen. Angestellte einer ortsansässigen Brauerei haben aus passenden Utensilien diese Figur zusammengebaut, die auch immer ein gepflegtes Bierchen zur Verfügung hat.
That's it what this figure is calling to us. Employees of a local brewery have built this "representative" from adequate utensils. There is always a cultivated beer for it.You lucky thing!

Symbols

Nein, das ist nicht das Wappen von Stuttgart, zumindest nicht das offizielle. Dieses Symbol eines nicht ganz unbekannten deutschen Autobauers, der in und um Stuttgart sehr präsent ist, befindet sich auf dem Turm des Hauptbahnhofes. Abends ist er beleuchtet und somit ein guter Orientierungspunkt.
It's not the emblem of Stuttgart, at least not the official one. This symbol is owned by a well-known german automaker, who's very present in and about Stuttgart. It's situated on the top of the tower of the main-station and illuminated every night. Therefore it is an excellent landmark for our visitors.

Winter Games Or: Check!

Auch im Winter steht einer Partie Schach im Freien nichts entgegen. Ob diesen drei Herrschaften dabei auch warm wird? Eher nicht!
It's possible to play a game of chess in wintertime too. Will these three players getting warm? Probably not.

Deer Pass

Der Hirsch ist das Wappentier von Württemberg. Dieser hier steht auf der Kuppel des Kunstgebäudes auf dem Schlossplatz.
The deer is one of two heraldic animals of Baden-Wuerttemberg, it stands for Wuerttemberg. It's situated on the cupola of the "Kunstgebaeude" at the Schlossplatz.

TV Tower

Man entkommt ihm nicht, immer ist er da. Heute nun ein Foto aus unmittelbarer Nähe. Die Fakten dazu: Bauzeit Juni 1954 bis August 1955, Höhe 217 Meter. Übrigens hat die sog. “Space Needle” in Seattle den Stuttgarter Fernsehturm zum Vorbild.

It’s always to see – the Stuttgart television tower. Today you can see my photo from spitting distance. You want to get some facts? Here they are: built from june 1954 to august 1956, overall height to the antenna point: 217 meters. The famous “Space Needle” in Seattle/WA is designed after the Stuttgart TV tower.

Belle Ruin

Ruine des Neuen Lusthauses – erbaut 1583 bis 1592 für Herzog Ludwig, 1904 vom Schlossplatz als Ruine in den Mittleren Schlossgarten versetzt, heute wegen Einsturzgefahr aufgrund der Vernachlässigungen in der Vergangenheit abgesperrt

zom Schwob

Ich weiß leider nicht, wie es im Lokal "zom Schwob" schmeckt, auf alle Fälle hat mir die Fassade des Hauses gefallen. Hier wird nämlich auf die "Sieben Schwaben" hingewiesen. Unfortunately, I don't know how it tastes in the local named "zom Schwob". I was fascinated about the storefront of the building. It shows the "Seven Swabians". Who wants to know more about these "heroes" should be visit this page or this page.

Play And Read

Hier hat eine große, namhafte Buchhandelskette eine Kinderecke mit Spielmöglichkeiten eingerichtet, die, als ich das Foto machte, auch gut und “lautstark” angenommen wurde.

A well-known bookshop has arranged a children’s corner for playing. The kids have accept it vociferous while the moms have had a chat.

Keep Smiling

Strahlend weiße Zähne möchte wohl jeder haben. Ich war aber trotzdem froh, dass ich nicht dort auf dem Behandlungsstuhl lag.

Everybody wants to get spotless white teeth. But I was glad to be outside the surgery.

Nice Places I

Der Südheimer Platz in Heslach. Früher führte hier eine Brücke über den Platz. Die übriggebliebenen Säulen wurden zu Lampen und Wasserspielen umgebaut – im Sommer eine echte Erfrischung. Von hier ist es nicht weit zur Seilbahn.

The place “Suedheimer Platz” in Heslach, a quarter of Stuttgart. Formerly there was a bridge. The remained pillars were rebuilt to lamps and trick fountains. It’s a wonderful place for recreation. The historic funicular is about five minutes away from here.

Ice Cold

Heute war es in Stuttgart richtig kalt, aber diejenigen, die auf den Höhenlagen von Stuttgart wohnen, hatten es noch etwas kälter. Die Bäume waren, im Gegensatz zu unten, mit dickem Rauhreif überzogen.

It was rather cold in Stuttgart today. But in the altitude areas of Stuttgart, where many people live, it was more cold than in the basin. The trees had hoarfrost.

Greetings From Lake Constance

Leider waren Bodensee und Alpen in Nebel gehüllt, aber diese kleine Kapelle ist doch auch ganz schön, oder?

Unfortunately Lake Constance and the alps were befogged all the time, but this little chapel looks very nice too, isn’t it?

Animal

Man muss nicht in die Wilhelma gehen, um Tiere anzugucken. Im Villa-Berg-Park gibt es ein kleines Gehege mit zwei Ziegen (?), die sich gerne auch mal streicheln lassen. Womöglich gehören die zwei zu einem Kindergarten, der sich gleich in der Nähe befindet.

It's not necessary to go to the zoological garden named "Wilhelma" to see animals. In the park of "Villa Berg" there is a little enclosure with two caprines (?) which are happy to be pet. It's possible that the enclosure is part of a kindergarten a few steps from it.

Lamp And Snow

Diese wunderschöne Lampe habe ich auch im Park der Villa Berg entdeckt. Meinen Arbeitsplatz habe ich gleich in der Nähe.

I've found these wonderful lamp in the park of "Villa Berg". I work near this park, therefore I can use my lunch time to make my photos for you.

New Castle (Neues Schloss)

Das “Neue Schloss” – erbaut von 1746 bis 1806, zuletzt Residenz von Wilhelm II., König von Württemberg. Heute dient das Schloss u.a. als Sitz von Finanz- und Kultusministerium. Zugänglich ist das Schloss leider nur im Rahmen von Sonderführungen.

The New Palace was built from 1746 to 1806. Wilhelm the Second, King of Wuerttemberg, was the last resident of the palace. Today it’s the domicile of the ministry of finance and ministry of culture and education amongst others. The palace is open for the public only for extra-guided tours.

Monday’s Demonstration

Seit einiger Zeit demonstrieren viele Stuttgarter gegen den Umbau des Kopfbahnhofes, das sog. Projekt “S21″. Heute waren, trotz Schnee und eisigen Temperaturen, wieder ca. 2000 Leute da – das Bild zeigt lediglich einen kleinen Ausschnitt For some months many citizens of Stuttgart demonstrate against the modification of the above-ground dead-end station to buried through station (so-called project “S21″). Today, there were around 2,000 people in face of snow and cold temperatures. The photo shows only a detail.

Überall in Stuttgart gibt es solche Plätze, auf denen man den Weihnachtsbaum entsorgen kann; den ersten habe ich schon am 27.12. entdeckt

Wochenmarkt in Heslach – hier gibt es Obst und Gemüse, Fleisch und Wurst, Backwaren, Eier, Blumen u.v.m; für viele Menschen, die den Weg in die Innenstadt scheuen, eine gute Möglichkeit um einzukaufen und zu “schwätzen”
