Voll des Lobes ist der Schwabe über sein Bier. Links wird auf die Originalität verwiesen, rechts wird ein Öko-Siegel vergeben. Das Bild in der Mitte könnte die Fähigkeit des Schwaben, auch mal etwas anderes auszuprobieren, ausdrücken.

The Swabian praises his beer highly. The beer on the left should be not a copy and the right one is made of ingredients from organic farming. Swabians can be flexible too. So they feel up to taste something else such as the pictures black ale in the middle.

Lesson Fourteen: Swabian Foolish Act

Die Weinstube "Zom Bäcka Dais" befindet sich direkt an der Stadtbahnhaltestelle Münster-Rathaus. Leider hat das Restaurant nach eigener Aussage wegen dringender Sanierungsarbeiten geschlossen. Von außen zumindest sieht das Gebäude ganz passabel aus. Auch das Wirthausschild macht einen sanierten Eindruck. Ein Schildbürgerstreich?

The vine tavern named "Zom Bäcka Dais" (at the Dais baker) is situated directly at city railway station Münster-Rathaus. Unfortunately the restaurant is closed in the moment due to urgent remedial actions. The building looks quite good from the outside. And the sign is suggestive of a renovated condition. Is it a foolish act?

Lesson Eleven: Swabian Staple

Unter Kraftstoff wird ja normalerweise Benzin oder Super verstanden. Aber manchmal kann auch ein gut gekühltes Bier dem dürstenden Menschen als Kraftstoff dienen. Warum immer das Auto verwöhne?

Normally you refer to benzine or diesel as fuel for cars. Sometimes a well cooled beer can be fuel for thirsted people too. Why only cosset your car? Cosset yourself!

Lesson Ten: Swabian Art

Das "Boulevärle" in Stuttgart-Münster ist ein bekanntes schwäbisches Mundart-Theater, alle Vorstellungen sind in reinstem Schwäbisch. Leider konnte ich mich noch nicht persönlich davon überzeugen, aber gehört habe ich nur Gutes.

The theatre "Boulevärle" (small boulevard) in Muenster is a famous dialect theatre. Swabian is spoken in the shows. There is nothing but positives statements about it. I'll see for myself.

Lesson Nine: Swabian Escalation

Ja, auch die Schwaben können mit englischen Wörtern umgehen. Wenn etwas (z.B. ein Bier) als "echtes Glanzstück" beschrieben wird, dann ist das wirklich die Krönung.

The Swabians can deal with English words. It's like a coronation when they characterize a beer (or another thing) as a "real (echtes) highlight". I've learned that there is "echt" in English too.

Lesson Eight: Swabian Closure

Swing top bottles become more and more popular. Have you ever heard the "Plopp" when you've opened such a bottle? It's too good...

Lesson Seven: Swabian Quality

Ungefiltert - so mag der Schwabe sein Bier auch! Ich bin heilfroh, dass das Plakat von den Schmierereien verschont wurde.

Un-Filtered - that's the way the Swabian loves beer too! I'm glad that the poster was spared from the scribblings.

May I Introduce 'Haeberle And Pfleiderer' To You?

Das Denkmal von "HÄBERLE und PFLEIDERER" steht vor dem "Friedrichsbau-Varieté" im Zentrum.

This sculpture in honour of "HAEBERLE and PFLEIDERER" is situated in front of the "Friedrichsbau" Varieté in the city-centre. Haeberle and Pfleiderer are (or were) two Swabian doyens performed by the actors Willy Reichert and Oscar Heiler.

Lesson Six: Swabian Valuation

Und noch ein Auto, diesmal handelt es sich aber um einen Werttransport. Flüssiges Gold, wie Bier auch genannt wird, wird mit diesem Gefährt durch Stuttgart transportiert. Gesehen auf der Ostendstraße in Stuttgart-Ost.

A car once again. This is a valuable transporter. Beer is called "liquid gold" and it is carried through Stuttgart with this vehicle. Seen at Ostendstrasse in the East of Stuttgart.

Lesson Five: Swabian Resoluteness

Nichts wie rein/hinein - Willkommen zum Canstatter Volksfest welches vom 24.09. bis 10.10.2010 stattfindet. Ich möchte hier keine Werbung für ein bestimmtes Festzelt machen. Die Brauerei "Schwabenbräu" ist aber die einzige Brauerei in Stuttgart, die auf Schwäbisch Reklame macht

Let's go in - Welcome to the Cannstatt Folk Festival which takes place from 2010-09-24 to 2010-10-10. I don't want to advertise a special marquee at the Wasen. But the brewery "Schwabenbräu" is the only Stuttgart brewery which publicize in Swabian dialect.

Lesson Four: Swabian Term - Gsälz

G s ä l z - das Wort zerfließt förmlich auf der Zunge, oder? G s ä l z. Als ich das Wort zum ersten Mal hörte, dachte ich an etwas Salziges (was auch immer). Aber es handelt sich tatsächlich um Marmelade.

Can you vocalize this word? G s ä l z. It melts in the mouth, right? First I thought about salties because this word contains "Salz" (salt). But actually it is jam. G s ä l z....

Lesson Three: Specific Swabian Order

"Ich kriege (besser: bekomme) ein Pils". Aufgenommen in der Stadtbahn-Ebene der Arnulf-Klett-Passage, dem unterirdischen Teil des Hauptbahnhofes. Damit möchte ich auch einen Rundgang durch den Bahnhof starten. Hat jeder sein Pils? Na dann, auf geht's!

Lesson Two: Swabian Order

Heute wieder ein Beitrag zum Schwäbischen Dialekt. Wer großen Durst auf etwas Besonderes hat, der bestellt Schnell a Hells, also schnell ein Helles. Das ist ein nicht ganz so herbes und nicht ganz so kräftiges Pils, genau richtig um den ersten Durst zu stillen.

Today I want to give you an understanding of the Swabian dialect again. Who doesn't know the feeling of big thirst? Then you must order Schnell a Hells (please bring me a 'Helles' as quickly as possible). A 'Helles' is a less tart and a less gutsy pils. It's the perfect beer to satisfy one's thirst.

Stuttgart's Staeffele #1:Willy-Reichert-Staffel

Das ist nur ein Teil der Willy-Reichert-Staffel. Hinter mir geht es, nach einer kurzen Unterbrechung, weiter, jedoch nicht mehr ganz so "spektakulär". Diese Staffel verbindet mehrere Straßen im Stuttgarter Süden. Eine Staffel ist, wie man unschwer erkennen kann, eine Treppe, die einige Höhenunterschiede überwindet und dabei i.d.R. mindestens zwei Straßen verbindet (hier gibt es mehr darüber zu lesen). Stuttgart hat eine ganze Menge davon, diese möchte ich ab sofort in unregelmäßigen Abständen zeigen. Willy Reichert (*1896, +1973) war ein deutscher (schwäbischer) Volksschauspieler, Humorist und Sänger.

This is only one part of the Willy-Reichert-Staffel. Behind my position there is the less thrilling continuation of it. These steps connect some streets in the south of Stuttgart. Staffel is another word for steps. and it connect generally at least two streets by bridging an elevation. There are more than 400 Staeffeles in Stuttgart and I want to show them (but not all of them) from time to time. Willy Reichert was a German (Swabian) popular actor, humourist and singer.

Zünftige Musik gab es vom SSB-Blasorchester. Am Vortag spielten die Herren noch beim Heslacher Hocketse auf. Respekt!

Und wer nach dem Museumsbesuch Appetit auf Fleisch bekommen hat, der hat die Möglichkeit im angeschlossenen Biergarten seinen Hunger zu stillen, ganz nach dem Motto des Neckarsäule, zuerst die Schweine im Museum "zu ehren" und anschließend "zu verzehren".

There is a nice affiliated beer garden for all who got hungry after the visit to the museum. At first you honour the pigs, then you eat them (it sounds better in the German version because it is a rhyme).

Nun kommt sicherlich die Frage nach der Ausstellung selbst. Ich habe die Ausstellung (noch) nicht gesehen, weil ich einerseits über einen am Eröffnungstag zu entrichtenden, wenn auch ermäßigten, Eintritt "erstaunt" war. Andererseits waren es sehr viele Besucher, die einen entspannten Besuch unmöglich machten (und ich wollte ja auch das eine oder andere Foto machen). Ich werde es nachholen.
You miss photos from the exhibition? I haven't seen it because of a (reduced) admission charge on that opening day. There were furthermore too many visitors to enjoy the collection and to make some photos for you. I'll make up for that at a normal day.

What A Mess! #2

Start der feierlichen Eröffnung durch das Neckarsäule und der "Chefin" und Begründerin des Schweinemuseums, Frau Erika Wilhelmer.

The Neckarsäule and the manageress and founder of the museum, Mrs. Erika Wilhelmer, have started the official agenda.

Anschließend sprachen der Sohn der Chefin und Gastronom, Herr Michael Wilhelmer (links im Bild) und der Oberbürgermeister der Stadt Stuttgart, Dr. Wolfgang Schuster.

Vor der feierlichen Durchschneidung des Bandes gab es für Frau Wilhelmer ein weiteres Exemplar für die Sammlung des Museums. Fortsetzung folgt...

What A Mess! #1

Nun gibt es in Stuttgart noch ein weiteres Museum. Am 01. Mai wurde im Alten Stuttgarter Schlachthof das "weltgrößte" Schweinemuseum  feierlich eröffnet. Es gab jede Menge VIPs, es wurden Reden gehalten, es gab zu Essen und zu Trinken, das Wetter spielte mit und die Stimmung war prächtig.

There is a new museum in town. On the First of May (May Day) the "world's largest" pig's museum was inaugurated. There were a lot of VIPs, a lot of speeches, food and drinks are provided for the guests, the weather was agreeable and the mood was good.

Im Mittelpunkt stand das "Neckarsäule", also "kleine Sau vom Neckar", denn im Schwäbischen wird vieles mit der Endung "-le" verniedlicht (z.B. Spätzle, Scheißerle, Mauldäschle). Fortsetzung morgen ...

The Neckarsäule (little sow from the river Neckar) was really an eye-catcher. The Swabian dialect knows the ending "-le" for all minimizations. To be continued ...
