Almost Saved By The Bell!

Dieses Tor- oder Turmhäuschen war Teil des König-Wilhelm-Viadukts, der nach nicht einmal 100 Jahren einem Neubau weichen musste. Glücklicherweise wurde dieses Häuschen Stein für Stein abgetragen und anderenorts originalgetreu wieder aufgebaut. So konnte es für die Nachwelt erhalten bleiben.

This gatehouse was part of the former König-Wilhelm-Viadukt which had to give way to a new building after not even 100 years. Fortunately this small house was dismantled brick by brick and rebuilt elsewhere true to original. So it could be preserved for the future.

SDP On The Way In Esslingen (5) - The Castle

Hoch über Esslingen wacht die Burg über die Alte Reichsstadt. Dorthin hat mich meine Exkursion natürlich auch geführt.

There is an impressive castle on a hill in Esslingen. It is watching over the former imperial town and was the objective of my excursion.

Viele Wege führen auf die Burg. Ich habe mich für die recht steile Burgsteige entschieden.

Many roads lead to the castle. I've decided on the steeply rising footpath named Burgsteige.

Wenn man wieder zu Atem gekommen ist, kann man die herrliche Burganlage genießen. Im "Dicken Turm" links gibt es auch ein rustikales Restaurant.

When you're recovered your breath you should enjoy the magnificent castle complex. There is rustic restaurant in the tower on the left. It is named "Dicker Turm" (bulky tower).

Hinunter geht es auf diesen Stufen der Burgstaffel.

If you are not claustrophobic you should leave the castle on these steps of the Burgstaffel.

Ruined! Worse Luck!

Wir sind in der Burgruine Hofen. 1250 wurde die Burg erbaut und 1783 teilweise abgetragen. Die Burg diente der Sicherung des Neckarüberganges und des Handelsweges.

We are in the midst of the castle ruin of Hofen. The castle was built in 1250 and partially gutted in 1783. The castle has served as protection of the Neckar crossover and of the trade road.

Hofen darf sich damit rühmen, die einzige Burganlage in Stuttgart zu sein, die hochragende Mauerreste hat.

Hofen can vaunt itself that it has the only castle complex in Stuttgart with wall fragments which raise up to the height.

The Striking View

Der Turm der Walpurgiskirche (leider nur noch eine Ruine) ist sehr markant und als Orientierungspunkt gut geeignet.

The tower of the church named Walpurgiskirche in Mühlhausen ist very striking and well qualified as a reference point. The church is only a hulk today.

The Tower Looks Like Unfinished

Ich nenne ihn einfach nur den "Unvollendeten", weil irgendetwas fehlt, nämlich die Spitze. Aber vielleicht tue ich ihm auch nur Unrecht und es soll so sein. Auf jeden Fall ist der Turm von Mühlhausen ein echter Hingucker.

I call him the "Unfinished". I think a steepletop is missing. How do you think about it? Without doubt the unfinished tower of Mühlhausen is an eye-catcher.

The Ruin

Das sind die Reste der "Engelburg" in Mönchfeld. Zur Geschichte dieser Burg verweise ich auf das nachstehende Bild. Von hier hat man eine herrliche Aussicht auf Mühlhausen, Hofen und Münster.

These are the leftovers of the castle named "Engelburg" in Moenchfeld. The castle has an interesting history. This place is a wonderful lookout too.

The Climb

Ein Weg, hoch nach Mönchfeld, führt am Palm'schen Schloss vorbei. Es ist, Gott sei Dank, kein allzu beschwerlicher Aufstieg.

One way up to Moenchfeld runs along the castle named "Palm'sches Schloss". Thank God the climb is not exhausting.

Diese baulichen Begebenheiten lassen auf eine ehemalige Burg schließen. Ob ich recht habe, wird sich morgen zeigen...

This building could suggest an ancient castle. If I'm right I'll show you tomorrow. Be patient ...

The Old Castle

Das ist das alte Schloss, vom Schillerplatz aus gesehen. Auch das Alte Schloss beherbergt heute ein Museum. Gerade sind jedoch Umbauarbeiten im Gange. Im Herbst soll z.B. ein "Kindermuseum im Jungen Schloss" seine Pforten öffnen.

This is the Old Castle on Schillerplatz. It shelters the "Landesmuseum Württemberg" today. There are some reconstructions in the moment because a children's museum in the "young castle" is under construction in some parts of the castle. It will open this autumn.

So heißt dieses Gebäude am Schillerplatz, gleich neben der Stiftskirche. Ursprünglich war es eine herrschaftliche Kelter. Die wunderbare Renaissancefassade erhielt das Gebäude im Jahre 1596 durch Heinrich Schickhardt. Heute beherbergt es das Musikintrumentenmuseum.

Fruit Box. It's the name of this remarkable building on the Schillerplatz, beside the Stiftskirche. Former manorial wine press it was decorated in 1596 by Heinrich Schickhardt with a Renaissance facade. Today it shelters a museum for musical instruments.

Relax

Endlich ist der Winter fort. Die Sonne scheint, die Vögel zwitschern, es grünt und blüht, es riecht nach Erde. Warum nicht in den Villa Berg Park gehen und das alles genießen? Oder, wie es der Zweck des auf dem Foto abgebildeten Bauwerks zu sein scheint, ein paar Entspannungsübungen machen. Das "Gebäude" stammt übrigens noch von der Internationalen Gartenbauausstellung 1993.

At last the winter has gone. The sun is shining, the birds are singing, all the plants will be in full bloom soon, it smells like fresh ground. Why not to go to the park of Villa Berg to enjoy all that? You can also make relaxation exercises in the pictured construction which is a relict of an International Garden Festival in 1993.

Mediaeval

Dieses mittelalterlich anmutende Bauwerk steht mitten in Stuttgart. Es könnte vielleicht einmal Teil einer Befestigungsanlage gewesen sein, leider habe ich keinerlei Infos dazu. Ist aber auch egal - schön sieht es auf alle Fälle aus. Heute wird es zu Wohnzwecken genutzt, aber es gibt hier auch ein Lokal.

This mediaeval-looking building is situated in the middle of Stuttgart. It's possible that it was a part of a fortification. I don't know. It looks lovely. Today it is used for residential purposes. But there is a restaurant in it too.
